How To Change UniFi Router Primary and Secondary DNS Address

Today I would like to share how to change the primary and secondary DNS address in the UniFi D-Link DIR-615 wireless router (aka residential gateway) provided by TM. The steps is pretty simple and straight forward. All you need to do is login to the wireless router using the administrator login below: -

Username: operator
Password: h566UniFi

Once you logged in, you will see the Internet Setup in the SETUP menu page as below. Next, click on the Manual Internet Connection Setup button to go to the PPPoE setting page.

Internet Connection

Once you are in the PPPoE setting page as below, you can now starting to change the primary and secondary DNS address to your preferred address provided either by Google Public DNS or OpenDNS.

PPPoE

You can select to use either Google DNS or OpenDNS. However, I am using one address from both provider as you can see the screen shot above.

Google Public DNS
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

OpenDNS
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

After changing the primary and secondary DNS address, please click Save Settings button to have the wireless router acknowledge the changes. Perhaps, if you know other good DNS addresses, I would like to hear from your suggestions and comments. Thank you.

My router doesn’t look like this, its not a DLINK.. this stupid router drop my connection very frequent, I need to keep ping the router else my connection will drop (WAN/WIFI).

I have tried manytime to reset the connection type, it just won’t work.

Sometime it even reset all the setting by itself.

    TM = Rubbish!

To jax: TMs are also good (I used D-Links and TMs so I can compare), you just do not know how to “cook them right” :) Use alternative firmware!

Great tips. I think it is a good idea to change the DNS to Google’s… hopefully it will give me better speed on Unifi.

Hi I just got my Unifi installed in my office yesterday.

I currently have a OpenDNS account. May I know what are the benefits of using both Google DNS and OpenDNS like you did with your setting?

    Thanks!

Hi, thx for the helpful info. However I have a problem. Everytime I try change the default DNS and click “Enter DNS manually” instead of “Receive DNS from ISP” all the pcs in my house are immediately cut off from the internet. Whether I use Open DNS OR Google DNS as the manually entered DNS address doesnt make any difference. Moreover when ever that happens the internet icon at the bottom right of the pc also says “Access: Local Only”. Hope you can help me in this as I would definitely prefer OpenDNS as compared to Unifi’s defualt DNS. TQ! =)

CS, after you have enter the OpenDNS into the primary and secondary DNS address, save the settings and reboot the wireless router to verify the changes. You can put the OpenDNS addresses in your notebook/PC network interface card/wireless interface card.
