This post will cover an upgrading process from Citrix XenServer 5.0.0 to 5.5.0 only. Let’s get started. Insert the Citrix XenServer 5.5.0 CD into the CD-ROM drive.

In your XenServer configuration panel, select Reboot or Shutdown to give you an option to reboot or shutdown this server and also enter or exit Maintenance Mode.

Then, select Reboot Server to reboot this server.

You need to log in to perform the reboot function.

Then, select F8 to confirm rebooting this server.

The installation process starts automatically. Next, the installer will perform hardware detection and initialization. Then, you will see the “Select Keymap” screen as below. Select your preferred keymap and choose Ok to proceed.

You will see the “Welcome to XenServer” screen as below. Select Install or upgrade XenServer Host and choose Ok to proceed.

Then, you will then see the “Welcome to XenServer Setup” screen as below telling you that the setup program will install the XenServer on the server and warns that it will erase all data on the hard drives. Choose Ok to proceed.

Next, the “End User License Agreement” (EULA) screen is displayed below. You can read the agreement by using the up and down arrow keys to scroll through. Choose Accept EULA to proceed.

You will see the “Installation Type” screen as displayed below. The installer detected an existing version installed. Select Upgrade XenServer v5.0.0-13192p on /dev/sda1 and choose Ok button to proceed.

Then, the “Back-up Existing Installation” screen is displayed. Choose Continue to proceed with the installation.

The next screen “Select Installation Source” below asks for the source of the installation packages. Since we are using a physical CD, choose Local media and choose Ok to proceed.

The next screen “Linux Pack” below asks for the Linux Pack from a second CD. This can be installed later. We are skipping this. Choose No to proceed.

The “Verify Installation Source” screen is displayed below. We will bypass this. Choose Skip verification and choose Ok to proceed.

Next, you will see “Confirm Installation” screen as below. Choose Install XenServer to proceed with the installation.

The “Installing XenServer” screen is displayed as below. The progress bar below shows the process of backing up of an existing installation.

Next, the progress bar below shows the process of Base Pack installation.

Finally, you see the progress bar reaching the completion of XenServer installation in the “Installing XenServer” screen as below.

You will see the “Installation Complete” screen as below showing that XenServer installation has completed. Choose Ok to proceed with the server reboot.

The server is rebooted and goes to the Citrix XenServer boot up screen as below and will automatically boot up the Citrix XenServer. Lastly, you will see the Citrix XenServer 5.5.0 configuration screen as below.

Hooray, the Citrix XenServer 5.5.0 is up and running!

Yes, but does it save your existing VM’s and shared storage?

Dave, I am using the free version so I shutdown all my VMs which located in the NFS shard storage located in first XenServer and move them to the second XenServer then start the upgrade process. All goes well.

I see you updated a Dell Server. Did you update the Dell Edition of the Xenserver?

I have a HP XenServer (hp edition) but i want to upgrade to the regular version of Xen5.5 is this possible?
i have a Windows 2003 SBS in one VM, a Windows 2003 Standard Server in another vm, and an XP Machine.

Server is an ML350, 2X Quadcore Xeon CPU / 10gb Ram

stnd server is on a seperate RAID (internal)
sbs server is on local storage

Are these going to fire up once this upgrade is complete?
i dont have two servers to do this, so zenmotion is not an option.
    Cheers,
    R.

Does this upgrade delete the local repository? namely, the VM’s and the ISO storage i have set up are local, and I would much prefer to avoid losing all this.

    Thanks in advance!

Remit, I recommend you backup your VMs before you proceed with upgrading.

Joe, I stored my VMs and ISO files in a shared NFS. I can’t tell whether this upgrade will delete local repository.

The local repository is preserved during an upgrade.
