Fedora 10 Released

The Fedora Project announced the release of Fedora 10 “Cambridge” on 25 November 2008. Fedora is a Linux-based operating system that showcases the latest in free and open source software sponsored and community-supported open source collaboration project by Red Hat.

Fedora 10 includes the premiere of a new graphical boot system called Plymouth. Plymouth is designed to speed up the boot process by taking advantage of a new kernel mode setting feature. Fedora 10 also features increased hardware support for a vast variety of web cams and better handling of printers via both direct physical connections and networks. Further, PackageKit, a software management tool that originally debuted in Fedora 9, has been extended in this release to provide on-demand codec software installation.

Fedora 10 features all new GNOME 2.24.1, OpenOffice 3.0, RPM 4.6, KDE 4.1.2, GIMP 2.6 and 2.6.27 kernel version. Nevertheless, this release of Fedora comes with LXDE, an additional desktop environment. It is a new project that provides a lightweight and fast desktop environment designed to be usable and slim enough to keep resource usage low. WordPress 2.6.5

WordPress 2.6.5 is released and it is advisable to upgrade to this release because it fixes one security problem and three bugs. The security issue discovered by Jeremias Reith is an XSS exploit. This security issue is fortunately only affects Apache 2.x which has configured to run as IP-based virtual servers. You can copy wp-includes/feed.php and wp-includes/version.php from the 2.6.5 release package if you just wanted the security fix.

However, this version includes 3 other small fixes in addition to the XSS fix. The fixes are: -

  1. prevents accidentally saving post meta information to a revision
  2. prevents XML-RPC from fetching incorrect post types
  3. adds some user ID sanitization during bulk delete requests

Nevertheless, you can read the full changeset between 2.6.3 and 2.6.5 to understand fixes on the previous version. So, do upgrade your WordPress to avoid the exploit. Lastly, I had upgraded mine before this post.

YouTube Goes WideScreen

If you didn’t notice, YouTube has apparently changed all its video screen format to widescreen. The older 4:3 aspect ratio videos will play fine in the new video format player but some video you will see the horizontal black bars on the side. YouTube is not the first to offer 16:9 video screen size whereas other site blip.tv, SmugMug.com and Vimeo.com has the widescreen feature long time ago.
