Spend Your 1 sen Coins Wisely

Do you know that the Malaysian Government has implemented the rounding mechanism to the nearest multiple of 5 sen in total bill amount? This has been effectively implemented on 1 April 2008. In this rounding mechanism exercise, if your total amount of a bill which ends in 1, 2, 6 and 7 sen, it will be rounded down while the total amount of a bill which ends in 3, 4, 8 and 9 sen, it will be rounded up. For example: -
i) a total bill amounting RM 1.01 or RM 1.02 will be rounded down to RM 1.00
ii) a total bill amounting RM 1.03 or RM 1.04 will be rounded up to RM 1.05
iii) a total bill amounting RM 1.06 or RM 1.07 will be rounded down to RM 1.05
iv) a total bill amounting RM 1.08 or RM 1.09 will be rounded up to RM 1.10
With this rounding mechanism, we as a consumer can reduce the usage of 1 sen coins. Please be reminded that this rounding mechanism will be adjusted in the final total amount shown in receipt or bill. This rounding mechanism will be applicable to cash and non-cash (cheques and electronic payments such as credit card, charge card and debit card) payments made over-the-counter. At this moment, the 1 sen coin remains a legal tender and can be used in any form of cash payment transaction. You have the option to use all your 50 sen coins (not exceeding RM 10.00) and all your 20 sen coins, 10 sen coins, 5 sen coins and 1 sen coins (not exceeding RM 2.00) in any form of cash payment transaction. However, we can still use the 1 sen coins to pay the RM 2.00 toll fee or we can surrender the 1 sen coins to be exchanged for other denomination in Bank Negara Malaysia or any banks in Malaysia. So, plan wisely before you buy to avoid paying extra rounded up amount.
