Can Malaysia celcos use cell towers to locate users?
Dec 04
Recently, I had read a news regarding Google Maps with My Location. Google has launched a location service for mobile users that doesn’t rely on GPS. This service is currently in beta. Users can be located on their location to a nearby cell tower without having to own a GPS-enabled cell phone.
Back to the title above. Do you think that Malaysia celcos is capable of doing that? If they are capable to provide this service, do you think they should charge a small amount of service fee on this? With this service in Malaysia, I can say the rate of missing people and person got kidnapped will be lesser.

As I know digi have provide this kind of service where you can locate the mobile user location by sending an sms to digi and will send back the result to you. Before you doing that, you need to use the mobile phone you want to track to be activated first.
I forget what is that service called, as my friend used it before…

if they you the service for good then yes. Imagine if the gov uses it to profile and search for people… what happens to our privacy?

I’m using Maxis Friend & Family Finder to search them. RM0.30 each find. It will give me the nearest location of the number.
Geolocation is available

It’s friend finder. But not so accurate as those in US, because what I heard about this in US is, they can locate user more accurate from the range within the tower and user, thus giving a more accurate location.
